How to install Windows updates manually using Powershell

Powershell was most widely used scripting language in all windows operating system which was supported by it,  so here i am going to show you how to  install windows updates manually in the windows operating system with the help of the powershell. To make it to work you need to have powershell installed in your operating system so you must use the windows operating sytem which supports powershell for eg. Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 20088 and above versions of the server operating system.

Since we are going to use the basic pwershell commands here you need atleast Powershell v1.0 in your operating windows machine. The next thing you need to do is you need to download the windows updates which you are going to install manually. Since using this script you can any number of windows updates you dont need to worry about the number of updates which you are going to install.  lets go to the script

$hotfixes = get-childitem -include *.msu -recurse
foreach ($hotfix in $hotfixes) {
start-process c:windowssystem32wusa.exe -argumentlist $hotfix,"/quiet","/norestart" -wait

Save the above script as “install-updates.ps1” in the location where you have the manually downloaded windows updae files. Its better to keep the windows updates seperately in a folder where you are going to start the installation. After downloading the updates and having the script ready to execute it, you need to do the folowing procesure to start the installation.

  • Goto -> Start -> search for powershell -> right click on powershell and select “Run as administrator” and click to open the powershell with the administrator privileages.
  • After opening the powershell with administrator privileages you need to move to the location where you have svaed the script file “install-updates.ps1”.
  • Now you need to allow your powershell session to execute the script files, for that you need to execute the below command.
Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned
  • After executing the above command you will be asked for a confirmation, there you need to give “yes”, and then now your powershell was ready to execute the scripts.

Now type the below command

Thats it it will start installing the Windows updates one by one and you need to make sure that only the windows updates with the extension “*.msu” will be installed with the help of this script.
